An English ‘Campaign” Travelling Chess Table or Board, circa 1840
the mahogany and rosewood hinged board/box inlaid with boxwood and ebony squares for chess (with peg-holes for a travelling chess set), and inset ivory sections for cribbage, raised on a detachable telescopic brass column with tri-form base (and splayed feet), 39.5cm wide, 71cm high (when assembled and the telescopic column extended), together with the original green leather travelling case (worn and distressed).
The telescopic brass column and feet fold up and can be stored away in a special compartment within the hinged board/box. The feet slide down the column and can then be locked in place. Two sections of the board slide away to reveal compartments (three on one side, four on the other) in which to store the chess and cribbage pieces.
