A Magnificent English Ornamentally Turned Ivory Chess Set, circa 1850
one side stained red, the other side left natural, the chessmen with elaborate ornamental lathe turning and decoration, kings surmounted with large Maltese Crosses and fleur de lys decoration, queens with feather finials, bishops as open mitres with gadrooned decoration, knights as arched horses’ heads, rooks as raised turrets with carved rustic brickwork and detachable flags of large size, pawns with reeded ball finials, with a specially made 20th century fitted collector’s case for display and presentation
