A Magnificent “Burmese Export” Ivory Chess Set, of Large Size, with a Lacquered Board for Chess & Backgammon, Canton, circa 1810
one side stained red, the other side left natural, the chessmen with ornate carving and gadrooned circular bases, kings with monarch’s faces and fleur de lys, queens similar but of smaller size, bishops with mitres bearing carved faces, knights with horses’ heads, rooks as turrets, the rooks bearing the Union Flag (polychrome) in a specially commissioned presentation case (Late 20th Century) in brown leatherette with a ‘lift-out’ tray in mushroom velour, together with a Canton Export black lacquered and gilt decorated games board, circa 1810, the exterior for chess, the interior for backgammon, decorated with flowers and scenes from Chinese Life (2)
