A rare English “Lund Pattern” ivory chess set, circa 1840
one side stained red, the other side left natural, kings surmounted with Maltese Crosses, queens with feather finials, bishops with split mitres, knights as carved horse’s heads with flowing manes and flared nostrils, rooks with double stacked turrets, battlements and cannon, pawns with reeded ball finials, the king 9.5cm high, the pawn 3.5cm high.
