A Jaques Staunton Weighted Boxwood & Ebony Chess Set, circa 1974
the chessmen lined with suede bases stamped JAQUES LONDON to the undersides, in a fitted black leather casket ('Geoffrey Parker, made in England'), with gilt-brass fittings and a hinged lid, the interior lined with suede and a lift out tray to the top, together with a Jaques mahogany and birch inlaid chess board, stamped JAQUES LONDON (2).
Dimensions: King: 9.5cm high, Pawn: 4.9cm high.
Casket: 27cm wide.
Board: 45cm wide, Chess squares: 5cm wide.
Provenance: Fortnum & Mason, Piccadilly, London. Sold with typed notes on the history of the Staunton design, a facsimile Jaques green label and a facsimile sheet on 'The Staunton Chessmen.', The Evening Herald, Tuesday, November 6th 1849.
