A varnished hardwood chess set, most probably German, circa 1870
one side in ebony, bishops with flat split mitres, knights with ‘spiked helmets’, rooks as turrets with brickwork, pawns with inverted urns and bobble finials, the king 10cm high, the pawn 5.3cm high. Unusual.
