one side stained black, the other side left natural, kings with crowns and holding orbs and sceptres, queens with crowns and veils, bishops holding books and wearing plumed hats, knights as horses’ heads with manes, turrets with brickwork, circular bands and spire finials, pawns wearing hats, all the chessmen raised over turned circular bases
