A Fine English ornamentally turned ivory chess set, circa 1840
one side stained red, the other side left natural, the chessmen with fluted, slightly bulbous columns of elegant proportion, kings surmounted with double palm tree leaves. pineapples and elaborately carved decoration, queen similar, with pineapples but of small size, bishops with palm frondes and open mitres, knights as horses heads over palm leaves, rooks as raised turrets with pineapple finials. pawns with palm frondes and pineapples, the king 11.6cm high, the pawn 5.8cm high.
