Rare “Harry Elliot” Ivory Chess Set, circa 1860
A Fine English Ivory “Playing” Chess Set, circa 1860
as depicted in Harry Elliot’s humorous lithograph “Mated”, one side stained red, the other side left natural, kings with pierced crowns (smaller knops in the alternate colour within) surmounted with fleur de lys, queens with ball finials and fleur de lys, bishops as open split mitres, knights as carved horses heads with manes and flared nostrils, rooks as stepped turrets with alternate brickwork, battlements and original ‘screw-in’ flags, pawns with ball finials, sold with two lithographs after Harry Elliot (1882-1959), one showing a similar chess set, both within white card mounts
