English Chess Set by Fisher, mid 19th century
An English ivory chess set by Samuel Fisher, mid 19th century
one side stained red, the other side left natural, kings with double pieced galleries, queens similar but with single galleries, both surmounted with balustered finials, bishops as split mitres, knights as horses’ heads, rooks as raised turrets, pawns with baluster knops and mounted with ball finials, the white king signed on the underside of the base: FISHER...MAKER...118 STRAND, the king 8.2cm high, the pawn 4cm high, in a 19th century mahogany and brass mounted box, the interior lined with printed paper, 19.3cm wide.
