one side stained red, the other side left natural, kings of slender form with double galleries and domed finials, queens similar but with one gallery, bishops with gadrooned ‘caps’ and reeded cone finials, knights as raised horses’ heads, rooks as reeded turrets with slender finials, pawns with baluster columns over stepped circular bases, the king 9.2cm high, the pawn 4.6cm high, with an inlaid and lidded mahogany box of a later date, 22.6cm wide.
