An unusual German ivory "palm" chess set, 18th century
one side stained red, the other side left natural, the kings with double "palm" finials, queen similar but with single "palm" finials, bishops with caps, knights as horses' heads, rooks as turrets with brickwork and spire finials, pawns with stepped bausters, the king 9.7cm high, the pawn 6cm high.
