A German Erbach ivory figural chess set, circa 1925
Gustavus Adolphus versus Ferdinand of Austria, one side stained dark brown/black, the other side left natural, Swedish king as Adolphus, Austrian king as Ferdinand, queens as consorts, bishops as courtiers, knights as rearing horse with raised front legs, rooks as towers, pawns similar to bishops, but of smaller size, kings, queens and bishops raised on carved naturalistic bases, the king 8.3cm high, the pawn 5.1cm high, in a rosewood box with metal inlay, 28.5cm wide.
