A French 'Lyon Pattern' Fruitwood and Bone-Mounted Chess Set, 19th Century

one side in a darker-coloured wood, the chessmen with bone mounts, kings and queens with pierced crowns, bishops with baluster knops and ball finials, knights with horses' heads in bones, rooks as tapered turrets with bone 'hats', pawns with baluster knops, in an oblong rosewood and mother o' pearl compartmented box with a hinged lid.

Dimensions: King: 8.3cm high, Pawn: 4.4cm high 

Box: 33.8cm long, 13.3cm wide, 7.5cm high.

Condition Report:

Lighter Fruitwood Side:

Lean to king and bishops. Piece of bone missing on rook base mount, a few natural flaws to the wood, nicely polished surface patina.

Black Side:

Lean to King, one bishop and a pawn. Tiny chip to top of one rook bone mount. A few minor hairline cracks and scuffs.

Rosewood Box:

Good. Includes a fitted compartmented lift-out interior. Mother o' pearl inlay missing to the front.
