Fascinating and most unusual antique chess set, designed for the use of a blind person. The chess squares (in two different shades of rosewood) are raised, so that they can be recognised by touch. Each chess piece has been altered (or given additional wedges or slotted wooden tags) so that the individual pieces can be identified by touch. The chess pieces have been drilled, and fitted with metal screws, which slot into the holes in the board.
This set has the most tactile, almost sculptoral feel to it. Lovely thing.
