An Unusual and Highly Decorative Antique Mah Jong set, circa 1920
with original paper retail label for Kaufmann & Baer (in ‘Chinese’ characters), the simulated ‘black lacquer’ box with gilt metal carrying handle and gilt-mounted edges or borders, the sliding front showing a colourful chromo-lithographed Chinese Magician or Mandarin with Chinese characters and an exotic bird, opening to reveal: five black lacquered drawers, containing 136 ‘ivorine’ and black lacquered tiles:
